pain &body perception - MRI study

Av Sara Coppi Skapad: 2025-01-18

Hi! I appreciate your interest in participating in my study.

My name is Sara Coppi. I am a PhD student at the Brain, Body, and Self Lab at the Karolinska Institutet.

Currently, we have some ongoing projects for my PhD!

We are inviting volunteers to take part in a psychological study during which we investigate nociception and body perception.

I will briefly explain what the experiment is.

We are conducting a study investigating how the brain processes body perception and pain, and we invite you to participate. The experiment is divided into two parts, both parts will take place consecutively on the same day:

Part 1: Behavioral Session (90 minutes)
The first session involves behavioral testing. During this phase, we will calibrate a laser to identify a level of pain intensity that corresponds to 3/4 on a pain scale. This ensures that the sensations are noticeable but tolerable. Following calibration, we will conduct a task to explore body perception. You will be asked to look at a prosthetic hand while receiving mild nociceptive (pain-related) stimulations on your real hand.

Part 2: MRI Session (2 hours)
The second session will take place in an MRI scanner. Similar to the first part, we will investigate body perception and pain while also capturing detailed images of brain activity using MRI. This allows us to examine how the brain responds during these tasks. The session is designed to be safe and comfortable, with all procedures carefully monitored.

Participation is voluntary and there is always the possibility to withdraw at any time. Your participation in this study will contribute to advancing our understanding of how the brain processes sensory and pain-related information. Thank you for considering being part of this important research.

Main Inclusion criteria:
- being between 18 and 50
- being fully healthy
- not having any psychological/psychiatric disorder
- not have taken part in similar experiments

Main Exclusion criteria:
- have non-removable implants
- have dental retainer
